Hearing is an absolute necessity in one’s life, hence it is very discomforting to see people suffer from any hearing problems. For a long time, hearing loss was not recognized as a major disease but people facing it suffer from many difficulties.
Audiology is the study which deals with treating speech and hearing disorders. An audiologist specializes in diagnosing and evaluating hearing disorders using advanced technology and medication. At present there is a severe dearth of audiologists in the country.
Audiologist examine inner and muddle ear, cochlea and vestibular regions of the patients suffering from hearing problems. Depending on the problem, audiologist conduct several other examinations to prescribe proper treatment to patients.

But in order to practice and become an established audiologist, a master’s degree is important. Further a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) is needed to earn national certification. A doctoral degree in audiology in India is well recognized in abroad.
More than twenty universities, eight public and fourteen private colleges in India with their own multidisciplinary clinical setups offer speech pathology and audiology programs which are accredited by Rehabilitation Council Of India (RCI).
Professional audiologists find employment in government and private institutions, teaching and healthcare establishments. Career in audiology offer opportunities in various sectors. Moreover audiologists also work with practicing physicians, hearing aid manufacturers and NGOs.
Audiologists also conduct clinical activities with patients and are involved in speech and hearing research, dispense hearing aids and assistive listening devices and teach in several educational and research institutes.
